A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The president announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in national projects. They were executed at an rapid rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
